ABOUT US
We are a social enterprise that uses rugby as a positive tool for change, working with young people in state schools in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark & Lewisham. Using rugby to develop character, resilience and confidence as well as promoting health, wellbeing and positive nutritional choices, we support young people, creating an environment that offers them an opportunity to improve their attitude, attainment and attendance at school, so that they can be the best that they can be.
We work closely with local community rugby clubs to provide pathways for further rugby development, linking clubs, schools and colleges to the local community to forge links that strengthen connections and foster community cohesion. Where appropriate we also provide additional support to disadvantaged children to maintain the inclusive nature of our building character through rugby programme.
WHAT WE DO
Our building character through rugby programme supports children of all ages and we deliver sessions in pre-schools, primary schools, secondary schools and colleges.
The programme includes breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs as well as core PE curriculum sessions where we introduce young people to the game of rugby and its ethos focussing on England Rugby’s core values:
teamwork | respect | enjoyment | discipline | sportsmanship
We focus on whole child development that delivers in addition to core rugby skills a focus on improving the three As:
Attitude | Attainment | Attendance
In addition, we offer personal development for teachers, facilitating their qualification as rugby coaches, offering them the opportunity to confidently deliver rugby sessions themselves at school.
We also offer the young people in our programme England Rugby Young Rugby Leader courses and the England Rugby Young Rugby Ambassador programme. These courses develop student’s real life skills including leadership, teamwork, decision making, communication, resilience, confidence and organisation and complement the rugby sessions that reinforce these qualities.
We are committed to connecting schools, colleges, local rugby clubs and the wider community to support real improvements in community cohesion, using rugby as a positive catalyst for change.

We deliver our coaching through a network of volunteers and freelance coaches, who work with us to deliver a flexible ever-changing programme across a growing number of schools.
Junior Coaches: Through our partnership with Old Alleynian Rugby Club and their Academy Programme (U16s to U18s) we support youth player development through the:
- RFU Young Rugby Ambassador Programme: developing player’s confidence and competence as rugby coaches at grassroots club level, through club volunteering opportunities.
- Supporting U18 player’s development as competent coaches via recognised RFU qualifications covering coaching, safeguarding and first aid. These junior coaches deliver introductions to rugby in primary schools and support senior coaches.
Senior Coaches: For our more extensive building character through rugby programmes in secondary schools we utilise senior level 2 coaches, including our founder, who works in several local schools that we’ve had partnerships since our inception in August 2014. Our coaches all have enhanced DBS checks, managed through the RFU’s eDBS system.
If you would like to work with us and are an RFU Level 2 Coach with relevant schools experience, please send your CV (rugby playing and coaching experience) to info@giveitatry.org.uk We are always looking for new coaches to support and extend our programme.
